When I retired from Professional cycling I felt a great sense of freedom when it came to my gear. For nearly 15 years I was bound to what the “sponsor” supplied to the cycling team. Now I am able to search the world for products that I want to ride. If I do not like a certain product, I can change it at any time and try something else.
When it came to pedals I considered a few factors. First I was interested in a pedal that could be used on all of my bikes. I wanted to use the same shoes weather I was on my road bike, mountain bike or any bike. Most importantly though, I was looking for a pedal and cleat combination that would allow me to walk around freely. For this to happen the cleat on the shoe needed to be recessed below the tread of the shoes. After consideration I chose Speedplay Frogs and have been very happy with the decision
Today, I guide cycling tours throughout Europe and I can spend a lot more time wearing my cycling shoes. I often find myself running back into a hotel across marble floors which I can do now without slipping or having to take off my shoes.
We ride high into the Alps and Pyrenees to see the Tour de France and I do not need to carry a second pair of shoes. We get to the mountains hours before the race arrives and with Speedplay Frogs I can walk on the trails, asphalt or climb to the best vantage points to see the riders. (no slipping or wearing out road cleats)
Shoes: I have found a few different mountain bike shoes that look exactly like road shoes on the uppers with a walkable sole. I choose these shoes because I am a bit traditional but unless you are “sponsored” you can choose to the products you want to ride with…

Note: After choosing the Speedplay Frog system I contacted Richard at Speedplay and he has been helping MJCT with pedals ever since. Thanks Speedplay
